Primal Law An Alpha Pack Novel JD Tyler Books

I am sorry, I suspect many readers love the way J.D. Tyler writes. I can see where the mix of action/adventure and romance appeals. For me, though, where the author misses the mark is the suspense. There is never any build to the 'relationships' which, from the two books I have read of hers, entirely skips the getting-to-know-each-other phase and goes straight to carnal obsession--midst flying bullets. The author has built an interesting world, peopled it with heroes, villains and situations that should appeal, but for me, just don't. I think there is just a missing chemistry of playful by-play that I appreciate to lighten the tension of situations. Her characters spend so much time either being chased, captured or becoming ensnared by sexual thrall that there isn't much room left for personal development. Considering how popular her works are, I am probably just not the right audience.

Primal Law An Alpha Pack Novel JD Tyler Books Reviews

Loved Jo Davis Fireman series so thought I would try her new paranormal romance series under her alternate pseudonym JD Tyler.. The book is about a bunch of top secret guys who are shifters and also have some form of PreCog or RetroCog ability, the group is run by a former Navy SEALS (who some of these guys also used to be). They use there Psy and shifting abilities to find and destroy lethal humans and non-human predators. The author again brings alot humor between the group of men. I thought the book did a farely good job at introducing you to the series during the first two chapters. I didnt feel like I was overloaded with information and I understood the concept the author was trying to get across. I also liked that all the different species they captured or took in (there is a blue Fae with wings) were all hot looking as men. Hey nothing wrong with making all of your men hot in a book )
As I have been scarfing up paranormal romances and urban fantasy romances for the last couple of years, I came across J.D. Tyler's Savage Awakening at the local library. I love shifter novels, but usually don't like the military based ones, but since I was borrowing not buying I decided to try it. I loved the characters in it, but was lost on the storyline. So I looked up her other books and got the first one, Primal Law, and read it afterwards. It cleared up a lot of questions I had from the second book, and now a novella and third book are out. This is one series I strongly suggest you read in the correct order.

That being said, I do think the second book was better so if you like shifter/military series please read Primal Law and then go on to Savage Awakening. As with a lot of books, the first in a series not only has to have the main romance but introduce all the other people and former occurrences which can often lead to a choppy feel to a book. Character development also is a bit rushed, but necessary to follow along with the plot which is close to several other series. But I do like Tyler's style of writing, not as hip as some books but also not as sex-based as to be one dimensional.

The set-up is a group of men that had been attacked in Afghanistan by a wolf shifters, decimating most of their platoon and leaving the survivors unprepared to become shifters themselves. They banded together, with government backing, to learn about their new life with the help of a military provided doctor and psychologist. Then a subsequent op further thinned their ranks, several killed, one lost as a prisoner, and brought in two natural born shifters to lead the men and show them how to best use their new powers-as each man acquired a special talent along with shifting into wolf form.

So while explaining all this, now comes the featured Jax/Kira romance of the book. Jax has been permanently injured in one of their ops, plus a romance with a female spy had set them up for the ambush that kills several of the men. Along with adjusting to his new shifter status, he now has to deal with the guilt and loss plus feelings of inadequacy caused by his injury. Kira, meanwhile works for a medical research company that she suspects of immoral wrongdoing, and steals info that she hopes to independently prove this. She ends up at the shifter compound, what was going on at her former company ties in with the fatal, failed op, and she finds she is the mate of Jax. Kira also wanders into a restricted area where "beings" that the men had captured and are unsure to do with are held. Kira finds a talent as a "being whisperer" and starts to rehabilitate them quickly. One they have named "Blue" because of his hair and wings, but because of his lack of communication no one has found out his name, fed him, or dressed in who knows how long. Kira immediately finds out his name is Sariel, he's a Seelie prince, and will figure prominently in the series. But back to Jax/Kira. Jax, because of the betrayal of his former love and current guilt fights the mating attraction, almost to his death. Kira, being full human, doesn't like the idea of biology picking her partner, and with all the man candy around doesn't feel an immediate urge to settle down with someone who hates the idea as much as her. They eventually get it together, as you pretty much figure.

But the book also adds a new person they pick up in a cemetery, who will also become a main player and ends up with a cliff hanger that picks up in book two. Which, in my opinion was a much better book, but reading this one first will make so much more sense out of the storyline. And Primal Law was still an enjoyable read.
I'll start off by saying that I LOVED this book! It was everything a paranormal romance should be and more. Jaxon Law is an ex Navy SEAL and a wolf shifter, made not born and he's also a member of a top secret group of shifter's(they all also have other nifty abilities) who hunt down dangerous shifters, other non-human's and humans and either eliminate or rehabilitate them. While trying to unwind for a weekend in Vegas he hears a woman scream and he rushes to her rescue. When he gets there he doesn't just find a woman in distress, he finds his mate! Kira Locke, who I love, has just stumbled onto a horrible secret(but doesn't know what it is exactly) and she's running from some pretty bad guys who don't want that secret spilled. Thanks to Jaxon she is saved from them and wisked away to their secret compound in the Shoshone National Forest where they all try to find out exactly what she's found.

There is lots of action, lots of lovin' and lots of big sexy wolf shifter's. Oh and I can't forget the sexy Royal Seelie fairy and the scorcerer/panther shifter. I read through other people's reviews of this book before and again after I read it and some have a point. Yes, she threw in a LOT of extra info, but I think that info is needed for the future books. I know there is at least one future book in this series....please please please let there be a bunch more.

My favorite characters would have to be Sariel, the royal Seelie fairy and Kalen Black, the panther shifter/scorcerer. I know the main characters should be favorites, but I can't help it. Kalen sounds SO HOT, and come on a panther....YUM!!! And then there is Sariel, who is tall, blue and has wings.....I love different characters like this one. And I really hope they each get a book of their own later on.

Back to the main characters...Jax has been through hell and has trust issues because of an evil past lover, but he sticks it outs and when he falls, he falls hard. And Kira is such a sweetheart but don't let that fool you. She's also pretty tough and can hold her own with the gorgeous wolf shifter.

So I recommend you at least check it out and try because it promises to turn into an awesome series, and there are quite a few big sexy shifters who will probably get their own happy ending too.
