Marlo Spencer loves everything retro. On the surface this preference for oldies is limited to TV Land television shows and black and white movies but it also extends to her love life. She has been carrying a torch for her high school sweetheart, Josh, for 12 years. Josh is the guy who fled to Paris after high school graduation and never looked back. When Josh emails her saying he is back in Napa and brings up the pact they made to get married if neither were settled by the time they turn 30, Marlo is ready to drop her life in Malibu for her second chance at love with Josh despite warnings from her best friend Nik, her BFF from high school and Nick's sister Savannah and Marlo's great aunt Madge to leave the past behind where it belongs. There are some books that start out a bit slow and then just keep getting better and better. This is how I felt about True Love Way. The main twist was obvious but the story that followed was a sweet, enjoyable and often funny one.
Although a bit corny, Marlo was a very likeable character. I found myself relating to her difficulty in letting go of the past as I have been there. Sometimes you get so used to feeling for someone that you don't even know why you feel that way - you just do. I also liked the way the author realistically portrayed Marlo's reactions to things. Sometimes you can be happy for your friends and want the best for them but still feel jealous or disappointed. The author managed to convey these feelings very well. Sometimes I wished Marlo was a bit less understanding and encouraging when it hurt her in the process but I guess that was a reflection of how much she cared for her friends.
My other favorite character in this book was definitely Nik. He managed to be sexy and "dude-ish" yet sensitive and sweet at the same time. I loved all the scenes he was in. Josh, on the other hand was a bit bland and it wasn't until much later on in the book that I felt his connection with Marlo. I wasn't a big fan of Savannah although I think I was supposed to be. She came across as a bit selfish to me.
I loved the ending and actually got goosebumps.
In sum, a very sweet chicklit story.
Finally, where can I get a Joanie Loves Chachi sweatshirt?

True Love Way Nancy Scrofano 9780985352004 Books Reviews
I very much enjoyed True Love Way. I particularly loved the old movies, vintage clothes and references to old TV shows. I actually kind of want to sit down and watch an episode of Green Acres after reading this book. What I especially liked was that even though Marlo loved old things, including her old car, she didn't take it too far. She had a smartphone and knew how to use a computer. Her character would simply have been unbelievable without enjoying some modern conveniences. As written, she is adorable and you find yourself rooting for her all the way.
The only thing about Marlo I didn't quite like was her obliviousness to her best friend Savannah's secret. It's hard to say what bothered me without giving away "the secret" and I wouldn't want to ruin the book, but the two girls are the kind of best friends that can only exist from a lifetime of friendship that started as children. As long as you are willing to play along with a few things you will really like True Love Way, including all the supporting characters and their fun interactions (except maybe one of the guys who imo is a much bigger jerk than almost everyone seems to think he is and probably deserved a few more kicks in the butt from karma for all the lies he told and his selfish, jealous, impulsive behavior).
Give this book a chance. You are unlikely to regret it )
I'm giving this book two stars even though I couldn't finish it. The writing was actually pretty good, scenes and places were vividly described, and the characters were well-drawn. I just didn't like any of them though with the exception of Savannah, Marlo's best friend. But, talk about immaturity on the part of Marlo! I don't want to give the plot away, but obviously Josh was a cad and still Marlo kept agonizing over whether or not to marry him. The guy tried to propose with a major secret that should have been out front immediately. He also lied to her. Marlo continually cried and carried on like a 16 year old. I finally just said, "Put your big girl panties on and DEAL with it." He said, she said, you did, you didn't, wah wah wah. This would have been a fairly good book for young adults, although the subject matter might be a bit intense. But at 67% I just gave up because I didn't want to spend any more time with these people, and it looked as though even Savannah would wind up being an idiot as well. Obviously not my cup of tea, but maybe enjoyable to others, so do read the good reviews before you decide up or down.
